Imagine Money
The collapse of our current financial system that is currently in progress is also acutely revealing inherent and systemic limitations (or perhaps lacks of limitations) within that system, which we ourselves are actually holding. It calls for courage to just look at what is happening, and imagination - as in re-imagining - to step into and stay with that, see what needs emerging, and enact it.
In that spirit we, Alia Institute, were warned two years ago by Bernard Lietaer that such a monetary hard landing was coming, that money was not value neutral, and that it was an under-utilized lever for social transformation. Now perhaps it's time for leadership, Alia community included, to build attention around this social entity and to actually play with its possible forms, including at upcoming Alia programs.
Such realization is emerging all over the globe, with tremendous growth in activity in complementary currencies, open money (LETS and others fast-forwarded), meta currency (multiple currencies), Twollars, etc. Open Money in particular can be seen as the coming together of complementary currencies, social networking, and ubiquitous computing (smart devices everywhere). Could we join the Alia-type practices we do with this suddenly enrichening field?
One question that has arisen is how we could experiment with both telling the story of money, and with moving forward with a more authentic telling of it through actually playing with and using Open Money, Money 2.0, at upcoming programs.
I've added two PDFs (a one-page summary and 6-page version) by Bernard Lietaer (there's more available on his site) on a concrete suggestion about such a currency (based on the Swiss WIR currency).
I'm looking forward to what we can create together.

It looks to me like one of the great challenges over the coming years and decades will be re-imagining our currency systems and economies. I'd be excited to explore how the ALIA community could contribute to this work.
I actually did a fairly thorough study of the Open Money approach a few years back, and I very much see the potential for this lever for systemic change. What really appeals to me about this approach is the level of personal responsibility and empowerment involved. It's success depends on the fact that with each transaction people step into their own power as co-creators of the system in a very real way.

Here's a lucid 6-minute video about Open Money and the MetaCurrency Project, which aims to create a platform for multiple currencies that would work in a way that is analogous to Open Source software, with open transport, open rules, and open data. This enables transparency and extensibility. What this could make possible is, for example, a currency specific to Alia Institute and its programs, but also, beyond that, currencies enabling bringing forth the resources and intrinsic, but as-yet-unmeasured, wealth of communities and regions. Let's explore!
