ALIA Institute

The theme for the 2010 Summer Institute is Transforming systems: What are we learning? During a mid-program Marketplace event, there will be opportunities to engage this question with 200 other leaders and pioneers who are elbow deep in the work of transformation in communities, organizations and other social systems across the world.

  • What stories do you have to share that would help deepen our understanding of transforming systems?
  • What successes have you experienced that others could learn from?
  • What are your current challenges and questions that others could help you think through?

If you would like to host (or co-host) a one-hour Marketplace session on the morning of Wednesday, June 9, please post a short outline of the session below. These sessions will be grouped into themes, so if others share your interests or have something to add to the session please feel free to self-organize into groups and we will compile all the info and create a Marketplace schedule. Please also feel free to get in touch with me (ryanluke@aliainstitute.org) if you have any questions about a session you may want to host.

"Culture Trumps Innovation" (Dennis Sparks)
"Writ large" (community, organization, team) or "writ small" (family, partners, individual) this pithy slogan from an esteemed colleague reminds me of the nature of systemic reaction to change, and the need to find ways to make malleable and flexible the "main" system so that it is allowing and accepting of innovation, to transform. How do you do this?

"What are your current challenges and questions that others could help you think through?"

I am a newly-assigned Director of Innovation for a global humanitarian agency. Let's discuss together:
How have you stepped or leapt into such a position? What’s the best answer to give to doubting colleagues who ask, “What is innovation?” How have you maintained positive energy? What do you read? Do you have experience working with a variety of cultures? What’s your experience building teams and empowering fellow catalysts?

Please see the attached for how we might enter the conversation.

We are trying to introduce many new ways to function in the nonprofit world in Bermuda. 4 years ago we introduced an online volunteer matching system....while the system has 3000 subscribers, we still are working hard to have this be the selected way to volunteer and manage volunteers. We are also trying to create/establish an online portal for the community to give, get information, apply for grants, share software, etc but getting people interested and to the table and working together has been challenging to say the least - why so often do we say we want to work together for more effective outcomes when after the conversation we go back to doing things the way we have been doing it all along. How can we break those patterns? It knocks the energy out of you when you hit walls like these.
Current Challenge - Creating dedicated Innovation Lab capacity and acceptance in Provincial Government - Ontario

I'm an unofficial voice in the Ontario Public Service agitating for the creation of a Innovation Lab capacity with a conducive physical space and dedicated facilitators in Design Thinking, Creative Problem Solving, U-Process, etc. There is a prevailing view that simply telling people about innovation processes and giving them links to more information will spark an explosion of innovation. It's like giving someone a violin and some sheet music and expecting them to play music.

The value of having a conducive physical space and trained people in social innovation processes is simply not recognized.

Interested in exploring where dedicated labs have been developed, especially within Government, how are they working, how were they created, how are they funded, and more broadly how to change perceptions about the necessity of having "music teachers" in organizations to model, shape, and encourage new ways of addressing complex social problems.
